A bathroom is one of my favorite rooms to rehab. The goal is to create a cheerful, relaxing space, often on a strict budget. Julia, at Hooked On Houses.com, has a post today correlating the “happiness” of a home to how light-filled it is. We did just that on our latest project.
The bathroom window brings in soft light, but the room still felt dim. Much of the light was sucked up by the dark linoleum on the floor. Also, the cabinets overhead were great for storage but made the small room a bit claustrophobic.
The tile is still in great shape but not as up-to-date as buyers prefer.
Instead of re-tiling or re-coating the existing tile, our budget required us to put up a tub surround. It is a nice, clean look. Brian Toutge, our carpenter, created a beautiful beadboard wall for waaaay less money than buying new tile.
Add a few touches here and there, and we have a peaceful, light-filled retreat.

impressed again.
Michele, you fill me up with your encouragement. Thank you.
What a great transformation. I love the beadboard.
Thanks, Cheryl. I love the beadboard, too. If fact, I’m putting it in my own house this month.
I love seeing the “in progress” pictures. Its just a reminder that a DIY project may not look too pretty while it’s getting done, but the outcome is just gorgeous. And well worth the time you spent on it.
Thanks, K-girl! I wish you could see it in person.
Hi, You’re bathroom looks great!
Just yesterday I panted my beadboard a nice white but I was stuck on what color to paint the top half as it’s in a light sucking below grade basement.
I was wondering if you could tell me the color you used?
It looks nice and light but not too washed out.
Susan, I have had paint color issue before. In fact, the house with this bathroom was a bear – had to re-paint much of the house because the colors “turned” once they were on the walls. Trim is another story. We almost always paint trim Sherwin Williams “Creamy” SW7102. This beadboard is painted “Creamy” too. It is a soft white.
Love seeing the before and after photos of the bathroom and the bedroom upstairs, You are doing an amazing job. Thank you for sharing with us.
Let me know if you’d like to see a picture of something specific in your great-grandmother’s house.
*snicker* Well that explains why I liked it so much.
I used SW Creamy on my beadboard also.I was actually wondering about the top color.
SW Creamy is such a great neutral color.
Susan – sooo, when you said “top half” you meant top half. Heh. The paint color above the beadboard is Sherwin Williams “Rice Grain” SW6155. It looks even better in person. Have fun creating your new bathroom!
This bathroom transformation is amazing – I love how bright and airy it is! Great job
Thanks, Holly!
I really like the updates made to the bathroom and to the upstairs bedroom. I remember sleeping in the bedroom when I stayed overnight with my grandparents. In the winter is was cold up there as there were no heat registers. Thanks for allowing us to see the renovations. I can’t wait to see the finished product. Keep up the great work!
We brought heat up to those bedrooms. Yay! I posted some pictures of the process here.
Hey there!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Hope your sis enjoys quilting as much as I do.
It takes real talent to see the “after” while looking at the “before.” You do that VERY well.
Dad
Thank you, Daddy!
Hi, Your new bathroom is terrific. What a chore you did! You asked me about how the twin bed cushions that I slip covered keep from sliding off. The cushions are so heavy and wide that slipping off the wood foundation has not been a problem. Thanks for stopping by my blog. xoxo Karla
It turned out wonderful. I would love to do something like this to my bathroom. I’m your newest follower from frugal Friday’s link party. I’m throwing my very first link party tomorrow (Monday). I would love it if you stopped by an added your project.

What a fresh and beautiful bathroom! Well done! I never tire of the look of beadboard. So timeless and so gorgeous!
Thanks for the encouragement, Jenny.
Gorgeous!
Thanks, Lisa.
We have almost the same bathroom at our house. The same nasty sconces! Did you have to re-sheetrock that area or just patch it. I am looking at doing the same remodel in ours but not sure if we can change the lighting. It’s looks great!
We just patched the sheetrock. I prefer having lights on both sides of the mirror (with new fixtures, of course), but we didn’t have enough room. If you have room for a modern mirror and sconces, I would definitely recommend it.
I’ll immediately clutch your rss feed as I can’t to find your e-mail subscription link or newsletter service.
Do you’ve any? Please permit me recognize so that I may subscribe. Thanks.
